Bathing Water Quality and Health Implications

چکیده
Considerable controversy exists with respect to water quality at bathing beaches. In the UK, South Wales beaches appear to be at the forefront regarding these views. An exhaustive study investigating water quality and health was carried out at Barry Island, Wales during the summer tourist season. The beach is a very popular holiday resort and attracts some 850,000 during the summer months. It is composed of fine grained sand backed by a sea wall. Water samples were taken at two hourly intervals between 1 1:00 and 15:00 hours over a 6 day period during a hot August period in 1995. Testing was carried out for faecal colifonns and faecal streptococci. Simultaneously, a very detailed questionnaire (n=1276) was distributed to beach users. The questions related to health, food consumed, family history, entry to the water or not, etc. Ten days later a follow up telephone questionnaire was carried out specifically to find if any person had contacted for example, ear problems, gastrointestinal symptoms etc. Twenty four percent of swimmers had illnesses compared to 5% for non-swimmers. Levels of faecal colifonns and faecal streptococci were found to be significantly high (45,000 and 16,000 respectively per 100ml). The survey was continued in 1996 at three South Wales beaches. Emphasis was placed on public perception of beaches and attitudes to seaside award schemes such as the European Blue Flag, investigating the legislative framework through which water quality is controlled and impact on the beach consumer.

Application of Chemometric Methods for Assessment and Modelling of Microbiological Quality Data Concerning Coastal Bathing Water in Greece
BACKGROUND Worldwide, the aim of managing water is to safeguard human health whilst maintaining sustainable aquatic and associated terrestrial, ecosystems. Because human enteric viruses are the most likely pathogens responsible for waterborne diseases from recreational water use, but detection methods are complex and costly for routine monitoring, it is of great interest to determine the qualit...
متن کاملHealth risk of bathing in Southern California coastal waters.
Urbanized areas often discharge large volumes of contaminated waste into coastal waters, which may pose a health risk to bathers at nearby beach areas. In this investigation the authors estimated the number of gastrointestinal and respiratory illness episodes associated with the microbial contamination of coastal waters among bathers at Southern California beaches from 2000 through 2004. Bather...

BACKGROUND Antibiotic resistance (ABR) is one of the major health emergencies for global society. Little is known about the ABR of environmental bacteria and therefore it is important to understand ABR reservoirs in the environment and their potential impact on health. METHOD/DESIGN Quantitative and qualitative data will be collected during a 3-year follow-up study of a river associated with ...
متن کاملEvaluation of microbiological quality of coastal waters in Greece.
To evaluate the microbiological water quality of bathing sites along the Achaia coastline (south western Greece), a survey was conducted to determine the concentration of faecal bacterial and phage indicators as well as the presence of human viruses. Seawater samples (234) were collected from nine bathing sites on the Achaia coastline and were analysed for the presence of: total coliforms, faec...
